What’s Delicious?

I absolutely love this word.  I use it with my clients to the point of being annoying.  In fact, I had a client jokingly tell me last week that I used it as often as most people say "how are you?"  I like to make a point.

Martha Beck uses the word in a fascinating way in her best selling book, Steering By Starlight.  In it, she encourages readers to ask themselves what is most delicious.  What goal, what turtle step, what friendship, etc..  Notice that this is very different from how we typically organize our days/weeks/years.  Our social selves (egos) tend to focus on what will move us ahead, what will make us the most money, what will look acceptable.

By changing our intention to what is most DELICIOUS, we position ourselves to have more fun, joy, and dare I say it, success.  By responding to what is in front of us, in this moment, with as much creativity and fun as possible, we can't help but be more successful.

After learning this phrase and concept, I can't tell you how much more fun I've been having. Just this morning, what was most delicious looked like this:

turkey for breakfast
brushing my daughter's hair
taking time to pet my Mango, my cat
writing this blog

What I've learned for sure, is that what is most delicious, might not involve the grand plans that we think will bring us fame and fortune.  It's the simple, everyday moments that flavor our lives.

So, just for today, be in the moment, and ask yourself, "What would be most delicious right now?"

This morning I asked a client what’s fun for her… she looked gobsmacked. “I don’t have… fun,” she finally said, rather awkwardly. So we talked about how she can get a daily dose of delicious fun.
My fun for today? Lunch with my pal Doug. Going to the grocery store at 11:15am between appointments. Having the windows wide open. Wearing lipstick. The right shade, natch.
    Reading your blog. Delicious.
